Conceived as a perfect construct for multi-generational living, Dally House brings two families together beneath a single roof by thoughtfully integrating a contemporary extension with a humble 1940s Mount Roskill state house. The brief demanded a delicate balance: providing necessary separation and privacy for the homeowners and their parents, while fostering natural moments of daily interaction. This generational dynamic served as a guiding metaphor for the architecture itself, sympathetically blending the character of the original dwelling with modern spatial requirements. To preserve the backyard for family play, a vertical addition was utilized, organizing the home into a 72-square-metre ground-floor minor dwelling and a primary two-story unit, both branching off a unified, shared entry lobby.

The interior spatial sequence is organized along a dramatic, double-height spine that forms the communal core of the main residence, seamlessly linking the entry, formal living, kitchen, dining, and an intimate sunken family room. A defining architectural gesture is a warm, vertical Cedar wall that begins at the exterior and runs the full length of this primary living space, gently curving inward to embrace the sunken lounge before continuing back outside. This rich timber element draws the eye through the home and anchors the expansive volume of the sun-drenched central atrium. Here, a suspended raw steel staircase serves as a focal point, filtering natural light from above into the living spaces below and casting ephemeral, shifting shadows throughout the day.

Driven by a modest budget that necessitated highly creative solutions, the material palette acts as a narrative bridge between the home's past and present. Native Rimu and Matai timbers, painstakingly extracted from the original structure, were preserved and repurposed as stair treads, infill flooring, and bespoke cabinetry. Deliberately retaining the scars of their past life, including bora trails, blackened nail holes, and remnants of entombed hardware, these timbers provide authentic character that contrasts beautifully with the charcoal hues of raw Corten standing seam and modern steel elements. Complemented by sustainable integrations such as Low-E skylight glazing, LED lighting, green insulation, and water-efficient fixtures, the resulting interior is a deeply personal, resource-conscious, and harmonious environment tailored for long-term family life.
