Aurora Childcare Centre
  • Project Childcare Centre

  • Location Peacocke South, Hamilton
Perched on a prominent wedge of land within the Aurora subdivision, this building comprises of two distinct forms that look as though they were once one, until being broken in two and twisted just as the gully and steam below once was.

To the north are baby and toddler rooms, south, below an ascending roof line pre-school facility. Central to this design is the outdoor play space, which is bounded by the building to the west and elevated above the street to the east. Shared by all age groups the play space is orientated and elevated to maximise daylight, outlook, safety and connection to the natural word, allowing our Tamariki to thrive.

Entering from the street, or parking spaces tucked below the building clear sight lines through the reception and administration area give glimpses of play.

Natural materials flow through the building as though woven through the façade.
Curved walls contrast efficient linear forms and generate curious shadow play as light streams in throughout the day.

Strong architectural forms and a natural material palette define this building, ensuring prominence without, gimmicks or cliches common to early learning centres.

Appropriately, this building that was concepted concurrently with the site masterplan will be central to its community and a harbour for growth and exploration for generations of Peacocke residents to come.
